Consistency Trumps Intensity – Avoid the Perfectionism Trap

You don’t have to take massive steps. I recommend you start your journey by taking small, consistent steps – day after day. Consistency trumps intensity. That is what we were supposed to learn from the fable of The Tortoise and the Hare. Better to workout five-minutes a day for five years than to workout five-hours a week for five months. You are going to learn to appreciate the power of SMALL-consistent action.

The SMALLEST action repeated, has a BIG impact. Small does not remain small. It grows like a snowball rolling down a snow-covered hill. It is the reason that habits are called the compound interest of self-improvement. Each day is our life in miniature. You’ll discover if you don’t do it every day, you won’t do it any day.

Consistency trumps intensity. Never let what you cannot do prevent you from doing what you can. Perfectionism is the enemy of consistency. It is another TRAP to be avoided. It leads to missed workouts and blown diets. How many times have you told yourself, I cannot get to the gym or do my entire workout, I guess I’ll pick back up tomorrow, or I already blew my diet for today, might as well enjoy myself. I will pick back up where I left off tomorrow. Tomorrow, we always think we will have more time and willpower tomorrow. The funny thing about tomorrow, it tends to look a lot like today. 

Good isn’t the enemy of progress, inconsistency is. A short workout is always better than a missed workout. A small dietary lapse is always less harmful to your progress that a big one. Every time we throw in the “what the hell card,” we erode our self-esteem and becoming a less disciplined person in the process. None of us are perfect, but we are all capable of consistency. Consistent action builds momentum. It builds self-esteem, and it compounds to produce fabulous results. The best way to improve your consistency is by monitoring it. If you want to improve anything, measure it. Neglecting to track is like paying a game without keeping score. How will you know if you are winning or losing?

The man that can engineer his habits can design his future and remake himself as he sees fit. No one is more deserving of success than the man or woman that has the discipline to take daily action. Don’t let your learning lead to knowledge, let it lead to action!
