Imaginary Difficulties are Impossible to Overcome

Many times, it is our beliefs that create the barriers to our success. For example, if you convince yourself, you don’t have discipline or willpower than your mind will look for evidence to substantiate that belief. If you believe that something is impossible, then for you it is. We must be aware of our thoughts because our thoughts guide our decisions and actions.

If we want to cultivate more powerful thoughts, we must be cautious about the things we tell ourselves. What follows the words “I am,” will have a massive impact on your life. Of course, you cannot just say I am smart and do nothing to develop your mind. That type of nonsense is dilutional.

What I am suggesting is that you support your affirmations with concrete action. Consistent, disciplined actions will develop your belief. You must give yourself evidence to substantiate your opinion of yourself.

My worst subject at West Point was English, but I don’t let that stop me from writing. I keep writing with the belief that I can get better. Anything worth doing is worth doing poorly until you can do it well. I keep writing, so I can get through those first terrible 10,000 pages. What keeps me going is my dream of helping thousands of people to cross the abyss, between knowledge and action so they can live a healthier more fulfilling life.

There is victory in pursuing a dream, whether it comes to fruition or not. The ultimate failure in life is not having a dream. People that aren’t pursuing their goals are only half alive. Don’t let that be you. Have a dream, have belief in yourself, believe that through hard work and dedication you can achieve it, and then give yourself more and more evidence to substantiate your belief. Good luck!

Be Serious, Don’t Be Casual

People that are casual about pursuing their goals become life’s casualties. They are continually disappointed in themselves, but not too disappointed because they never really expected to achieve their results. They never put pressure on themselves to produce results.

Casual people take a lax approach to life. They have no written goals, and they don’t share the vague goals rattling around in their head with anyone else. The only time they come up is when they complain about not reaching them. These are the same people that waste their best hours chatting, gossiping, watching TV or addicted to social media.

Serious people expect to make progress. If their goal is to lose weight, they set weekly goals. They track their food to ensure they create a caloric deficit. They share their goal with supportive friends who they check-in with regularly to share their progress and frustrations. They spend their time with people that have achieved their goal and will be a positive influence on them. They put internal and external pressure on themselves to make consistent progress.

When someone tells me their frustration with losing body fat I begin by asking them, how many calories they are eating each day. When they say they don’t know, I know they aren’t serious. Many people complain about their genetics, but when I ask them how many calories they are eating each day, they don’t know. If you don’t know how many calories you are consuming each day, don’t expect to lose much weight or keep it off.

Change Starts with your Environment.

Willpower won’t work! Habits happen. The easiest way to interrupt a bad habit and replace it with a good habit is by shaping your environment. So many people beat themselves up over a lack of willpower when what is missing is a lack of commitment.

When you are committed, you’ll shape your environment to eliminate temptation and foster the behavior you want to adopt. If you’re serious about eating healthier, you will remove junk food from your home and always ensure you have healthy food available.

When you are committed, you don’t rely on willpower; that inner resource that depletes as the day progresses leaving us vulnerable to temptation. If you take a moment to reflect, you will realize that most of your bad habits occur during the last hours of your day. That is because your willpower has left you naked to temptation. If you haven’t remove the temptation from your environment, you have effectively set yourself up for failure. If you want to change your behavior, start by changing your environment.

Stop Constantly Checking Email!

If you want to be productive, you must do things that produce results. Being busy isn’t the same thing as being productive. Determine one thing you need to accomplish each day and work on it during your most productive hours. The first two to three hours of your workday are your most valuable. Your creativity, focus, and energy are at their best. Don’t squander your best hours on low priority tasks.

Win your morning, and you win your day. We have all experienced days where we felt like we did a lot, only to realize we didn’t accomplish anything meaningful. You’ll discover that you spent the day reacting to others instead of sticking to your plan. I recommend you use your smartphone to check your schedule for the day and ensure there are no legitimate emergencies in your inbox, then ignore it. Don’t even open your email browser until after lunch.

Spend the best hours of your workday on your most impactful task. Devote yourself to something that will produce results. Checking email is addictive, but you must overcome the temptation to continually respond to everyone else’s demands and work on meaningful projects. That is how you become productive. If you want to be more productive than 90% of your colleagues, stop checking emails and start producing.

Each Day is Your Life in Miniature

The reason I obsess about habits is that what we do each day is what matters. It is our life in miniature. If you aren’t happy on a consistent basis, then you aren’t going to live a happy life. If you aren’t working on improving yourself each day, a year from now, five years from now, you will not be any better than you are today. Habits are the invisible engineers of our lives.

The best way I know to engineer a better life is by engineering better habits. We have the most control over the bookends of our day. Wake-up reading, writing in a journal and exercising. Don’t fall into the common trap of making a living and not designing a life. It is so easy to lose sight of what is important. I did it for years. It is only recently that I realized that I need to stop, stand still, and assess.

We only have one life to live, and it isn’t going to start over. Don’t waste it doing what must get done and start doing what you want to get done. What you want to accomplish. What you want to achieve. Pursuing a dream and not achieving it isn’t the greatest tragedy of life. Not having a dream to pursue is.
